2014: The Rollercoaster

To say I had a year full of ups and downs would probably be an understatement. With the down being my wife's battle with breast cancer, and the ups being my continued journey with the Olympus Visionary program 2014 was the epitome of contrasts.

This post will highlight my year in images and each will offer a small insight into what drove me to shoot that particular image. And before we get started I just want to thank ALL OF YOU who have been a part of my journey. Whether you have been here in person, or as a friend or acquaintance online, you are all a part of what has made my year the magical time it has been.

Bless you all for bringing love, laughter, joy, wisdom, and well wishes to my life.

I love you all and will see you in 2015!!!

JANUARY: Welcome to the New Year
January was the beginning of one of the coldest, snowiest winters I can remember. As my family settled in for the cold night ahead I headed out to see if I could catch a glimpse of the sun before more snow moved in.

February: The cold is upon us.
February was brutal. The cold swept in along with huge amounts of snow. My wife was starting to feel the effects of her chemotherapy now and our lives were changing.

MARCH: A month where we knew we were loved.
You know how blessed you are by the friends you have. My great friend David organized a benefit dinner for my wife and our family to help us through the rough months ahead with her cancer treatment. Not only did he arrange this huge event, he also got Olympus Imaging involved along with the members of the Visionary program. We are truly lucky to have David and Olympus among our friends.

APRIL: Spring brings new adventures.
In April I decided to offer my brother, an aspiring barber, an opportunity for a photoshoot. I figured the escape to a pair of abandoned rail cars would offer a cool location to do this promo shoot for him. It was definitely one of my more fun shoots of the year.

MAY: Be who you are and do what you were born to do.
May saw things start to turn around in regards to family life. Becky was past chemo and surgeries were done. It was the month that things started to look like they were headed the right way. I shot this self portrait while on an urbex trip in Detroit with a group of friends because the graffiti resonated with me.

JUNE: Let the warm Michigan sun sooth my soul.
My beautiful, strong, and inspiring wife sitting in the sun at the beach on Lake Michigan. I don't think anyone can ever know how much I love her.

JULY: Up Up and AWAY!!!
For the second year in a row my incredible and dear friend Mo managed to lift me above the worries of the world in a hot air balloon. She is one of those people who can make you smile no matter how dark the world around you may be. You are a blessing Mo. And a HUGE thank you to the balloon pilot Mark Enszer for not only a great flight, but one my son and I will never forget!

AUGUST: I can’t believe I am doing this!
In August I did my first photo event for Olympus. It was in conjunction with Hunt's Camera of Boston and held at Appleton Farms in Ipswich Massachusetts. Getting flown to another state to do a presentation and lead a photowalk was such an incredible thrill. I still look back at that weekend and think to myself," I can't believe I did that!" I met great people (Don, Brian, and my host Andrew) and got to meet the greatest photo enthusiasts. What an awesome weekend!

SEPTEMBER: A month of monster weather and beautiful moments.
The worst storm in more than a decade tore through my town toppling hundreds of century old trees and leaving thousands without power. I spent part of that evening being interviewed on the local news as I was out photographing the storm as it hit. But I was also able to capture the beauty that comes AFTER a storm, when the light of evening softens the world in shades of pink and orange.

OCTOBER: A month deserving of more than one photo to share.
In October I got to do my second photo event of the year. An event in conjunction with The Camera Shop of Muskegon, and Olympus Imaging, I was able to present my landscape photography to a group of people and then lead them on a photowalk along the Lake Michigan shoreline. Incredible to be able to do an event in my home state!

My third big event of the year was the annual Scott Kelby World Wide Photowalk. I host one of these every year here in Michigan and every year they get better and better! This year I was so excited to have my dear sweet friend from Olympus fly in for the event! Jennifer was able to meet my family and my Michigan photography friends and make some new friends herself. It was the perfect photographer's weekend!!

NOVEMBER: The annual Visionary Summit!!!!!!!
Every year Olympus Imaging hosts the annual Visionary Summit. They bring us all in for 5-6 days of fun events where we get to just enjoy one another's company and get inspired. I have so many photos from this event, and there is so much more to it than this brief blurb. But this photo shows you my "other family" my Olympus brothers and sisters. All incredible photographers and human beings. Yes...I know how lucky I am.
